With Dr. Jewa M. Lea, D.C.
There's nothing mysterious about chiropractic. It's a natural
method of health care that focuses on treating the causes of physical
problems, rather than just the symptoms. The Chiropractic
model of health is centered on the philosophy that the human body
will heal itself given the right opportunity and circumstances.
With a normally functioning spine and a healthy
lifestyle, your body is better able to heal itself. Your spine
is designed to support your body weight and protect your spinal
cord, the vital link from your brain to the rest of your body.
The spinal cord, which is protected by the spine, is the main pathway
of your nervous system. It controls feeling, movement, and
function throughout the body. Since your spinal nerves affect
all parts of your body, problems in your spine can cause other problems
as well.
The purpose of the Chiropractic approach to health
care is to uncover the cause of your health condition, not merely
cover up your symptoms. The absence of symptoms (e.g., pain)
does not equal good health. Wellness Care encompasses several
aspects of overal health: physical, emotional, mental, and
spiritual.
There are three phases of Chiropractic care:
Relief, Correction, and Wellness. Relief is the first phase.
The goal of this phase is to reduce or eliminate pain. The
number of visits necessary to accomplish this will depend on your
age, underlying spinal or joint condition, length of time you've
had your condition, and other lifestyle choices.
Restoration of normal or maximal functions is the
goal of the Correction phase. In most conditions, pain is
the last thing to show up and the first thing to leave when treating
the musculoskeletal system. Adaptations that have taken place
in muscles and other soft tissue (e.g., ligaments and discs) require
care beyond the relief phase to correct.
The purpose of the Wellness phase of care is to
prevent relapses of previous conditions and to address new conditions
before symptoms appear. When maximum improvement has been
achieved, the doctor will suggest an appropriate level of care neccesary
to "maintain" the corrections made in the first two phases.
Chiropractic is commonly known for treating back
pain. It has also been found to be effective in treating:
| Pregnancy-related back pain |
Headaches |
| Neck pain |
Ear infections |
| Shoulder problems |
Arthritis |
| Carpal Tunnel Syndrome |
Dysmenorrhea |
| Scoliosis |
Hip Pain |
| Sport injuries |
Knee pain |
| Plantar Fasciitis |
Sprained ankles |
| Tendonitis |
Foot pain |
| TMJ Dysfunction |
Sciatica |
Chiropractic Care and Massage Therapy complement
each other. The effects of massage last longer when couples with
chiropractic treatment, and vice versa.
